Editor's entry
~1 min readAsk and It Is Given collects Esther Hicks’s transcriptions of material she attributes to a non-physical group consciousness she calls Abraham, edited with her late husband Jerry Hicks and published by Hay House in 2004. The book lays out a Law of Attraction framework in two parts: an exposition of the underlying view (everything is vibration, like attracts like, emotion is the signal), followed by twenty-two numbered “processes” — pivoting, scripting, segment intending, the emotional-scale ladder — for shifting one’s vibrational set-point.
It is the most circulated of the Hicks/Abraham books and one of the founding texts of the modern Law of Attraction industry. Rhonda Byrne credits this material as the direct inspiration for The Secret (2006), and the broader Hay House catalogue absorbs its vocabulary. Outside the channelling-receptive audience the reception has been sceptical: critics point to the unfalsifiable framing in which any criticism is itself a vibrational mismatch, and several originally-supportive figures have publicly distanced themselves from the Hicks operation over the years. Within New Thought it remains foundational.

Reception
editor-collectedThe most circulated of the Hicks/Abraham books and one of the founding texts of the modern Law of Attraction industry — Rhonda Byrne credits this material as direct inspiration for The Secret. Outside the channelling-receptive audience the reception has been sceptical: critics point to the unfalsifiable framing (any criticism is incompatible vibrationally with the message), and several originally-supportive figures have publicly distanced themselves over the years. Within New Thought it remains foundational.

Frequently asked
3 questions- What is Ask and It Is Given about?
- It is Esther Hicks’s transcription of material she attributes to a non-physical group consciousness she calls Abraham, edited with Jerry Hicks. The book lays out a Law of Attraction framework — vibration, the emotional-scale ladder, and twenty-two numbered processes for shifting one’s vibrational set-point.
- What is the relationship between this book and The Secret?
- Rhonda Byrne has credited the Hicks/Abraham material, and Ask and It Is Given specifically, as the direct inspiration for The Secret (2006). Esther Hicks appeared in the original cut of the Secret film before her segments were removed in a contractual dispute. The Law of Attraction vocabulary that the Secret popularised comes largely from this earlier book.
- How is the channelling framing received?
- Within New Thought circles and the broader Hay House catalogue the framing is treated as legitimate. Outside that audience the reception is sceptical — the framing is unfalsifiable (any pushback can be reframed as a vibrational mismatch), and several originally-supportive figures have publicly distanced themselves over the years.
