Anunnaki, Sumerian Gods or Ancient Astronauts from Nibiru? Re-examining Zecharia Sitchin

Have you heard about the Theory of a planet called Nibiru where an extraterrestrial race lives named; the Anunnaki? Did you know that according to this theory we humans are the creation of these extraterrestrials to mine gold for them to create a sheet made from gold particles around their dwindling atmosphere. The creator of this theory is Zecharia Sitchin, a writer of science fiction books. My name is Kayleigh and today we are going to look into the Anunnaki, were they Gods or Extraterrestrials? Deities from an ancient religion or Ancient astronauts who were later deified? In my last video we looked into one of the first religious buildings in Mesopotamia, the Anu Ziggurat of Uruk. Uruk was part of the Sumerian empire, the empire that is credited for the first writing system, and credited with the first city of our current civilization; Uruk. The Sumerian empire emerged in Southern Mesopotamia around 4500 BCE in present day Iraq. In 1849 archaeologists found 14 clay tablets with cuneiform writing during excavations in Iraq, the translation of these tablets tell the story about the origins of the Sumerian religion; The Anunnaki. Anunnaki literally means; Those who from heaven to Earth came. According to Zecharia Sitchin the manuscript on the tablets told the story about the Anunnaki, who were an advanced humanoid extraterrestrial species from the undiscovered planet in our solar system called; Nibiru, which has an elliptical orbit around the sun and passes earth every 3600 years. Sitchin claims that the Anunnaki are the Nephilim in Genesis and that they are the missing link in the evolution of the Homo-Sapien. Sitchin states; “on the planet Nibiru the Anunnaki were facing a dire situation, ecological deterioration was making life increasingly impossible, there was a need to protect their dwindling atmosphere and the only solution seemed to suspend gold particles around the atmosphere like a sheet to act as a protection shield”. Gold was an exceptionally rare metal on Nibiru, so they went to look for a planet with gold and found Earth’s abundant gold resources. Approximately 445.000 years ago the Anunnaki came to Earth and tried to obtain the gold from the waters of the Persian Gulf, but that operation quickly failed. They then started mining operations in Southern Africa and for many thousands of years the Anunnaki exploited the rich gold deposits in what is today South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania. About 300.000 years ago the Anunnaki assigned with mining the gold mutinied over their dissatisfaction with their working conditions. The Anunnaki were still in desperate need of gold, so it was decided to create a breed of miners who would be slave workers in the Southern African gold mines. Sitchin claims that “it was then that the chief scientist of the Anunnaki named Enki and the chief medical officer Ninhursag used genetic manipulation and in-vitro fertilization to create ‘primitive workers’, the first homo sapiens, to take over the hard labor in the gold mines”. According to Sitchin homo sapiens were made in the likeness of the Anunnaki. The essence of the blood of a young Anunnaki male was mixed with the egg of an earth-born female hominid of the homo erectus species. The fertilised egg was them implanted into the womb of a female Anunnaki in a process similar to modern day in-vitro fertilization. Through trial and error Enki’s desired result was reached and once it was perfected they mass produced homo sapiens. But as you can imagine, the “production” of homo sapiens couldn’t continue forever and this new species was eventually given the ability to procreate. Eventually over time the new breed became so numerous that some of them were expelled from the Anunnaki city centres and they gradually spread over the planet. Approximately 7000 years ago the Anunnaki were forced to temporarily leave earth’s surface when the Antarctic glaciers melted, causing the Great Flood. But according to Sitchin the flood was caused by the gravitational pull of Nibiru, causing the Antarctic ice cap to slip into the ocean and created a world wide tsunami that wiped out everything on earth. This flood destroyed the Anunnaki bases on Earth, and of course these had to be rebuilt. The Anunnaki needed more humans to help with this massive effort and slowly started to teach mankind agriculture. According to Sitchin the Anunnaki left earth approximately 6000 years ago after they had set up the foundation of human civilization in Sumer, Mesopotamia. Then there’s the Theory that the Christian religion is connected to the Anunnaki. Enki and Enlil however have a similar story to that of Cain and Abel and they’re connected to the great flood. Enki and Enlil are the sons of Anu (the god of the sky) and Ki (the Goddess of the earth). The Akkadian story goes as follows: The Gods Anu, Enlil, Enki and Ninhursag created the Sumerians and their comfortable living conditions for them to procreate. Anu is the Supreme God, ancestor of all deities, god of the Sky. Enlil is the God of the wind, earth, air and storms. Enki is the God of Water, knowledge, mischief, crafts and creation. Ninhursag is the Mother Goddess, Goddess of fertility and mountains. Kingship was descended from Heaven and the first cities were founded named. The two brothers Enlil and Enki, had rivalry between them for the control of earth. Enki was more kind towards the human, while Enlil was more annoyed at them because they made too much noise and prevented him from sleeping. Enlil and the other Anunnaki decided to rid the earth of the humans, but Enki warned a human Utnapishtim and gives him instructions to build an ark. (Utnapishtim is also known as Noah in the Biblical story of Christianity). On this ark were 2 of each animal, just like the biblical tale, thus preserving the animals and the seed of mankind. The flood lasted 7 days and the Goddess Inanna mourned the destruction of humanity and promises Utnapishtim there will never be a flood again. After the great flood Enlil made sure humans could never become overpopulated again by reducing their numbers using wild animals and famines. Sitchin is arguably the most important proponent of the ancient astronaut hypothesis over the past several decades, he was a frequent guest on the Coast to Coast AM Radio show, which in 2010 presented Sitchin with a lifetime achievement award. What does the Scientific community say? Scientists and Academics have rejected and dismissed Sitchin’s ideas and works as pseudoscience and pseudo-history. His work has been criticized for flawed methodology and mistranslations of ancient texts as well as for incorrect astronomical and scientific claims. Back when Sitchin wrote his books only specialists could read the Sumerian Cuneiform writing. American biblical scholar Michael Heiser states that he’s found many inaccuracies in Sitchin’s translations. As has Professor Ronald Fritze, as he mentions the example of Sitchin’s claim that the Sumerian sign Dingir means pure ones of the blazing rockets, even though it’s widely known that this sign means God or Goddess. Adding that “Sitchin’s assignment of meanings to ancient words is tendentious and frequently strained”. Fritze also commented on Sitchin’s methodology, writing that “when critics have checked Sitchin’s references, they have found that he frequently quotes out of context or in a way that distorts evidence in order to prove his contentions. Evidence is presented selectively and contradictory evidence is ignored”. Sitchin based most of his arguments on his personal interpretations of the Sumerian texts and the seal VA 243. Sitchin wrote that these ancient civilizations knew of a 12th planet, when in fact they only knew of 5 planets. Hundreds of Sumerian astronomical seals and calenders have been decoded and the total count of planets on each of these seals have always been 5. Seal VA 243 has 12 dots that Sitchin identifies as planets, although according to Michael Heiser the symbol that Sitchin interprets as the Sun is actually the symbol for a star, making the smaller dots not planets but stars as well. The symbol that Sitchin ascribes to be the sun has no resemblance to the hundreds of documented Sumerian sun symbols. The translation of seal VA 243 reads “You’re his servant”, which is thought to be a message from a nobleman to a servant. Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics Roger Wescott noted Sitchin’s amateurishness when it comes to the Sumerian language. Sitchin has made the claim that all the ancient languages including early Chinese stemmed from Sumerian. Although the Sumerian language is the virtual archetype of a language-isolate according to linguistic taxonomists. This means that the language doesn’t fall into any of the well-known language-families or exhibit clear cognation with any known language. Of course there are more explanations from the scientific community that debunk Sitchin’s claims. His writings have been universally rejected by mainstream historians, as Sitchin seems to deliberately misrepresent the Sumerian texts by quoting them out of context and mistranslating words to give them a different meaning. Sitchin’s books are labelled by the scientific community as pseudo-archaeology. Some people wonder why these “extraterrestrials” would use old time movie prop like technology? Their rockets and space-suits look like they come straight from a science fiction film from the 80’s. If they are as technological advanced as Sitchin claims, why don’t they have antigravity? Why don’t they travel through worm-holes? Why don’t they just teleport? It seems that Sitchin has constructed the image of what he beliefs aliens would look like and what their technology would look like from the images on the Sumerian tablets, instead of understanding that these images were depictions of Gods and unknown objects from an ancient time we have little understanding of.
