Stephen Dobos interviews a guest to define hypnosis and distinguish it from the Silva Method. He explores how the hypnotic state opens the mind to suggestion and how the Silva Method uses similar altered states for self-directed mind training.

thank you season for taking the time to meet with us today I did have some questions with regards to your presentation could you just give us an idea a brief definition of hypnosis and how it works in our daily lives [Music] so yeah it's good that you asked that question because right as a I teach the silver method because Jose Silva created this program but he studied everything from meditation to hypnosis to you know he did past life regressions he did all kinds of different things and the way that I would explain hypnosis from my perspective right is its suggestion so hypnosis is providing a suggestion an idea right to our brains which we wanted to fulfill on so its hypnosis uses the same technique as let's say meditation what it would go it takes you deep into a level of relaxation right and in that relaxation the hypnotist right the guide will then ask questions to uncover content in your subconscious mind whereas in the Silva method or in a meditation based program you're consciously going to this level and you're consciously asking yourself to access your subconscious mind so the the similarities are more than the differences are and the hypnosis is really that suggestion that query that connection with your subconscious mind right in a conscious in a way that accesses States or accesses information that you don't have access to in your you know conscious state that we are let's say in right now yeah and you asked earlier about you know the I did a couple presentations and what would you know what what's important in those is you know there's two main areas that I think that are important because number one is that most people have a misconception as to how our how our mind and our brain and our body are connected right and our mind right is this where's your mind point to your mind can you show me where your mind is right we don't know where it is right we have neuroscience and they're looking for it and they're they're making guesses but you can't really connected you can't say where it is right so you got to go to like spiritual or esoteric practices which you know have different ideas in the metaphysical World in terms of where the mind is right and that the mind is basically a common Consciousness or the mind is a you know connection with Spirit or God right so so our mind is is you know what I want to say with that is that our mind is something way bigger than than what you know science or Neuroscience talks about it's a much bigger much more connected uh space the other thing is our brain right our brain is something which we often you know misinterpret or we mix it up with mine you know we count the brain sometimes we refer to his mind and vice versa but the brain actually is a it's a it's a computer it's a chip right it's a chip that's processing the information that it's getting from the Mind Right which is thoughts primarily right thoughts and it's it's it's using that and it's partly a ram chip and it's storing information it's partly a processing chip which is processing information and it has access to all the all the content exists right just like Google you can search Google to get information from servers in Harvard to servers in Singapore your mind can access information through the use of the brains and connecting with the bigger Consciousness when you know the tools on how to access that you know and then finally you know when you're thinking something the Mind does something right it creates something whether it says I'm going to fly to the I'm going to go to Mars right like Elon Musk as my example today is like Elon Musk wants to go to Mars why would you want to go to Mars right that sounds pretty crazy uh it's all just red sand and rocks like that's nuts but that concept that idea allows for Elon Musk right to to work in the real world right in the physical world take steps toward creating the infrastructure the Rockets the things that are needed to get to Mars right which then benefits us here so by having these crazy ideas right which are created in this mind we process that goes into the brain says all right I want to get tomorrow's okay well you want to get to Mars so how do I do that I got to let's build a rocket okay so then we gotta build the rocket and then what our brain does is okay I'm in this stage I'm building a rocket which means okay I need to do certain things so it sounds electrical signals right through our nervous system down to the body and the body starts working right it starts fulfilling on those steps that we ask it to do so our body right whether it's you know whether it's we're looking for something whether we're listening for something whether it's you know communicating whether it's doing work whether it's you know using your brain for calculating things or or or creating a design of a rocket ship or whatever it is right those electrical signals of the nervous system are the uh you know it's like the drive by wire it's like the steering wheel saying okay we need you to do this we need you to do that all right and finally there's this you know there's the system we call it the the Neuroscience calls it the reticular activating system right which is your brain's filtering mechanism when you give it an objective when you have an idea I'm going to go to the hypnosis conference show then your brain says okay what do I need to do like I gotta okay I gotta check the website do I need to get a ticket do I what do I do how much does it cost where's the location where do I park right all these different things the brain's working through and then the body then follows through with whatever it can when it has to so but but the reticular activating system filters out the stuff that's not important right so if you're searching on Google it comes up hypnotist conference New York no that's not it hypnotist conference San Francisco no that's not it right it it gets rid of the stuff that's gets that's not essential in this situation so that's one of the main you know that's one of the main topics or the main content that I'm sharing is hey guys you know you got to do this figure out how it works the second part of that conversation uh is okay so how do you increase your performance right how do you get more or better of what you want if you are currently in a state of you know uh you you've accessed you now you know that your your mind your brain and how this all works okay so okay that's great now what like how do I use that and the next big step for most people I think is you know where to start is well let's get clear about what I'm thinking because whatever I'm thinking whatever is in this Con great Consciousness the conscious mind I have and it's communicating to my brain right I'm sending it messages so those messages are they the right messages for me right is my reticular activating system working to actually clean out the garbage the stuff that I don't need or am I just sending all kinds of mixed messages and when I'm sending mixed messages which we most of us are until we actually start clearly thinking about something right like whether it's a career path right whether it's uh you know it's it's the the courses I'm going to take at school whether it's you know uh how to take the bus to get to my first job right whatever that is until that attention is focused there's a lot of static and by getting rid of the static right by clearing out the static or getting clear of what static is really there I can then completely change the result of my life I can completely change the result of what I'm doing and how I'm interacting with people or you know the the results I'm getting in my personal life the results I'm getting in my career and my at school the grades I'm getting because often we have contradicting ideas right and a lot of our ideas come when we're children it's people give us these ideas which are thoughts right which become beliefs and beliefs are just repetitive thoughts as thoughts that I've talked about a lot right uh you know so if if you know you're a parent or a caregiver says you're never going to amount to anything then that sticks right or you're going to be a doctor that sticks so and maybe I never wanted to be a doctor but I end up being a doctor and at 60 I say what did I just do you know what was that all about you might Discover it later in your life so so getting clear about what those thoughts are will help you to move and progress along that lifespan or that route that you have set for yourself and if you are clear about it then you'll just get there faster because you're gonna you know put aside the stuff that doesn't matter you know you're not going to stay up and binge Netflix if you know that you're going to build a rocket tomorrow and you got to get people to the Mars right you're gonna say no I can't watch that because I gotta work on some algorithm or something tomorrow right or you know you're not going to binge Netflix if you know that your wife is gonna have a baby tomorrow and you're just like you're getting all the other stuff ready right so these are the things that focus in any area right is it helps with and and the most important part of that is being clear about what is actually what is going on here like what am I actually thinking because what I'm thinking is what actually happens in my life period and and I think that's the most important is everything we do in our lives is because we thought it first not the other way around we think it and then we take action on it and then it becomes reality and then we say oh why did I do that you know and these are the things you know we you know as kids in high school or whatever we should have done that right or oh I did that so these are the different experiences we have and when we have these different experiences then we can either leverage them to keep going or we can correct them all right so so those are the two main messages and whether you do it with hypnosis whether you do with meditation whether you do with the syllable method whether you do it with the journals whether you do with the psychologist but it doesn't matter right there's so many different mobileities out there what's important is that you keep going on that because it it's always going it's always moving it's not it
