What is Human Design?
Human Design is a self-knowledge system devised by Ra Uru Hu, the pseudonym of Robert Alan Krakower (1948–2011), in 1987. It assigns each person one of four energy types: Generator, Manifestor, Projector, or Reflector. A composite chart called a bodygraph, derived from the exact date, time, and place of birth, determines the type. Ra Uru Hu described receiving the system during an eight-day episode on Ibiza in January 1987, which he said involved an encounter with a disembodied Voice. He began publishing and teaching it from Ibiza in the early 1990s.
Human Design vs adjacent systems
Human Design is often grouped with astrology because it uses a birth chart. Both assign meaning to celestial positions at birth. They diverge in scope: astrology has a documented history spanning two thousand years and several independent traditions. Human Design synthesises that material with three other source systems and adds a proprietary layer of type assignments with no independent footing in any of them.
The Enneagram is the closest parallel as a personality typology in a spiritual context. Both assign people to a fixed type. The Enneagram's origins are contested, but they trace back to teachers in the 20th century who drew on an existing esoteric lineage. Human Design's synthesis is the work of one person in one episode in 1987, with no prior transmission lineage.
The four sources
The system's structural backbone is the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, mapped onto 64 gates on the bodygraph. Western and Vedic astrology supply planetary positions at birth and at a second point 88 days prior, said to correspond to the formation of the fetal nervous system. The Kabbalistic tree of life (see Kabbalah) informs the geometry of nine centers on the bodygraph. The Hindu chakra system contributes the logic of those centers, though the bodygraph layout does not replicate any standard chakra map. Ra Uru Hu also described a connection to neutrino streams as the physical mechanism, a claim that physicists and critics of quantum mysticism have not accepted.
The four types
A person's type is determined by which channels in the bodygraph are defined (consistently active) versus undefined (open to external influence). Generators, said to make up roughly 70 percent of the population, have a defined sacral center and are described as having sustainable life-force energy. They are advised to respond to life rather than initiate. Manifestors initiate but do not have a defined sacral center. Projectors neither generate nor manifest and are described as suited to guide others, advised to wait for invitation. Reflectors have no defined channels and are said to be rare, needing a full 28-day lunar cycle before significant decisions.
Reception and scholarly standing
Human Design has no peer-reviewed research base. The claims Ra Uru Hu made about neutrinos serving as information carriers are not supported by particle physics. Scholars who study quantum mysticism classify Human Design among the systems that borrow physics vocabulary without scientific warrant. Within spiritual communities reception is divided: some practitioners report the framework as genuinely useful for self-understanding; others regard the eclectic synthesis as lacking spiritual authority. The Court of Florence ruled in June 2020 that Human Design cannot be copyrighted, placing the system in the public domain without adjudicating its spiritual claims.

The index does not yet hold items dedicated specifically to Human Design teaching. Its structural sources each have their own entries: astrology, the I Ching hexagram system, Kabbalah, and the chakra model. As Human Design content enters the index, it will gather here.
